Thank you for taking your time to record and explain all the technical stuff, I like reading and listening to these things. :)
I have a little background too so this helped me to understand what you said. I just wanted to give my two cents too about your video. :)
I am probably in the minority here but I sincerely don't understand all the issues with the ending people are having. I like how it is now and I don't think your version(s) fits with the last part of the music and I'll try to explain why.
You said that love wins so the ending should be happy with a higher note but with those accords sounds more "horror" like instead of happy; it ended up, in my opinion, even "colder" than how it is now because it hasn't the accords that create the "mood". It misses the "phatos" factor and also the surprise factor if we wanna say so, that has it now.
The last note as it is now is really good, in my opinion. It is dramatic but not much. In my opinion it's not the music that makes the difference here.. it's them and how they end it. With that note I can either see a sad ending pose like it is now and a more happy/lovey-dovey one (I'm still holding a little hope that they will change the final pose in a non-dying one). Plus the added pauses I don't think help it to make it sound more choesive.
Personally, everytime I hear that last part you played over and over literally my breath stops... seriously.. I hold my breath. Goosebumps all over.
Now, I'll point out another thing that came across watching the video, as a spectator but I hope you don't take it as me being mean or whatever but just as a little heads up for future projects you will make :)
You said "in a perfect world". Certainly there are rules in music (like everywhere) you must follow in order to compose a good piece but then, you're free to do what you want. If the composer choose not to have equal parts that's up to him and the music still is good. Music is like painting and cooking.. Rules are still there but it's up to the imagination of the author how to use and switch those "ingredients". :)
I know you said you didn't want to insult the composer but eh, you kind of did. I know it's personal but the way you phrased your whole speech (I know it's not your first language -mine either- and you did an AMAZING job explaining all those difficult things) sometimes didn't come as personal opinion anymore. Like, I'll find another way to explain myself. If the purpose was to explain why some people are seeing issue Ithink you could have make it differently.
For example, explaining what you said at the beginning, the bars, phrases etc. and why the ending sounds "weird" (imho it's not but anyway), like, just explaining the reason why. And maaaybe at the end you could have said how YOU imagined the piece; not, giving suggestions to how change it (also because imho the result isn't as good -sound wise eh, you're really a good pianist so I'm not talking about your skills) and also clarify that the composer is free to play with notes and schemes as he wants, because that's the truth.
Using phrases like "in a perfect world" "it doesn't make any sense" I don't think was a good idea, especially because I know you didn't mean it in a bad or mean way. I know you didn't do it with bad intentions but I, as a spectator, I had this impression while watching. It's like: rules are these, the piece is wrong, and no alterations to the rules are allowed, here's how the piece was supposed to be according to the rules, the author messed up with it.
Can an existent piece of music be altered? Yes. But how? Personally I don't like when others change almost completely the music or the arrangement (music compositions or songs) because I think it's not fair towards the author. Now, if you add just more instruments is a little bit different because the music, the notes is still how the composer composed it but you just make it "richier". This happens when a song or a piece of music is played by an orchestra. It just makes it even more beautiful, it adds "color" to it. I think for example of how their music editor added cymbals to the last Scriabin’s piece in their Seasons FD or the added violins in Latch. The music wasn’t altered or changed. Just more powerful.
Soooo, at the end of all this (lol) I just want to make it clear that I appreciated your effort and time to prepare this, it was an interesting watch and that I'm absolutely not here to discuss your skills and years of studies, I'm not in the position. I just wanted to give you my honest opinion about it. :)

After seeing many concerns on Tessa & Scott’s free dance ending music, I decided to take matters in my own hands and make a video where I explain some facts and express my own opinions regarding the ongoing theme.
About me: My name is Katherine (Katrīna in my native language) and I have been in the world of classical music for about thirteen years. I play the flute and piano and I am also experienced in music theory and music history. This is my sixth year of supporting Tessa & Scott’s skating and I have already participated in a project that contained both my knowledge about skating and music - I wrote an article about Tessa & Scott’s free dance music on 13/14 season in collaboration with the well known TS blogger Iggie.
The video explains:
- What is quadratic structure in music? - Where is it used and how it sounds (with example)? - What is micro quadratic structure in music? - How is Tessa & Scott’s free dance built in terms of structure? - Where are the problematic places in the music? - How to solve these problems?
As I know next to nothing about video editing, I asked our beloved @balletfever89 to help. She was extremely kind and caring during the process and I’m happy how the video turned out!
Some more comments:
- English is not my native language, so pardon my grammar mistakes; - Nor I, nor @balletfever89 are professional video makers. Constructive criticism is nice, but keep in mind that we are not Casey Neistat or Liza Koshy; - Yes, I know the video is long, so grab some snacks or make some tea, but more importantly - concentrate on every word as the theory in this video is most likely something very foreign to you; -I’m sorry for the look of the wall behind; I didn’t have very much time so I recorded at school (which isn’t the most modern looking building); -I’m also sorry for the fact that our classes don’t have sound isolation so you can hear very well how other people are practicing around me; -I say on the video “last week we witnessed both of their new programs on the Grand Prix stage” because I recorded the video just after Skate Canada; - Don’t be shy to ask me any questions; especially if you didn’t understand something in the video. I put my social media accounts in the little box below the video. :)
I hope you enjoy the video! ☺️
